The Committee believes that there is a good argument in favour of a free trade agreement with Mexico and is encouraged by the benefits that this would represent. What we need is to send a strong signal to the Mexican government in that regard. Filled with videos, animations, interactive quiz questions and a glossary to explain all the technical terms – Free Trade Advantage has been designed to help new and experienced exporters move in the same way through the FTA process and ensure that Australian companies fully leverage all the benefits that FTAs have to offer. With regard to the views expressed by the AmWU and AFTINET, the Committee considers that parliamentary control and public accountability, as envisaged by the Standing Committee on Treaties, are sufficient to strike the right balance between social, economic and environmental interests in negotiating trade agreements. The EU and Australia have concluded negotiations for a political framework agreement with a number of economic and trade cooperation agreements. Learn about tariff results and rules of origin for Australia`s free trade agreements through the FTA online portal. The annual high-level dialogue on high-level trade policy meets regularly to discuss bilateral trade relations. The committee received advice from the Australian Union of Manufacturing Workers (AMWU) 16 and the Australian Free Trade Investment Network (AFTINET)17, which called for caution in pursuing a bilateral free trade agreement with Mexico. Mexico is competitive as an exporter of horticultural products and perhaps it wants to use a free trade agreement with Australia to improve access to these products, as was the case recently during free trade negotiations with Japan. Access to lawyers, citrus and table grapes could be a central objective.13 For Mexico, a free trade agreement with Australia could be part of its long-term strategy to diversify trade and investment networks and develop trade and economic relations with the Asia-Pacific region.6 Free trade agreements (FTAs) are international agreements that remove or reduce certain barriers to trade and investment between two or more Country.

Australia currently has 11 free trade agreements with 18 countries and is seeking to negotiate and implement additional agreements. While the committee acknowledges some differences of opinion among Mexican officials on a free trade agreement, the Committee notes that discussions on the concept of a free trade agreement between Australia and Mexico with Mexican parliamentarians have been encouraging. A free trade agreement between Australia and Mexico would boost trade in the following Australian products: Austrade has detailed information on activities in New Zealand and ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. In meetings with a Mexican parliamentary delegation, the committee received strong assurances that a free trade agreement would be welcomed in Mexico.
